RUTH ADKINS

Ruth Adkins, 91, of Grinnell died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was held Monday, March 1, at Grinnell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the church, and Rev. John Keck, pastor of the Assembly of God Church at Industry, Ill., officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Casket bearers were Gene Adkins, Lee Adkins, Travis Adkins, Curt Funk, Eric Powell and Ryan Powell. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the Grinnell United Methodist Church Window Fund.

She was born April 11, 1918, on the family farm, rural Brooklyn, the daughter of Ernest and Frances Gaumer Breniman. She attended rural school, then graduated from Brooklyn High School with the class of 1936.

She was united in marriage with Delmar Adkins on March 4, 1944, in Fort Monmouth, N.J. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm northeast of Grinnell, then in 1960 moved to her parents' farm southeast of Brooklyn. They moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1995.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and Poweshiek County 4-H. She also served as a volunteer for Grinnell Regional Hospice. She and her husband traveled throughout the United States and Europe.

She is survived by her husband, Delmar M. Adkins of Grinnell; her sons and daughter, Gene Adkins and Lee Adkins of Brooklyn and Gayle Powell of DeWitt; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mildred P. Belknap; and two brothers Lester and Forrest Breniman.
