DORIS WINCHELL

Doris Winchell, 78, of Grinnell died Wednesday, June 25, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was held Monday, June 30, at Smith Funeral Home with burial following in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Grinnell Regional Medical Center Blueprint for Health.

She was born June 4, 1925, to Henry and Pearl Young Lauber of rural Jasper County. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school until the ninth grade after which she attended high school and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1942. She then was employed at the Grinnell Shoe Factory. She was married on June 27, 1947, to Merle (Gordy) Winchell on her parents' farm west of Grinnell. They resided in Malcom until 1971 when they moved to Grinnell. During her lifetime she also was employed at DeLong's, Alco, Grinnell College and most recently with Copy Connection. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities, was a dedicated volunteer at Grinnell Regional Medical Center and shared walks and good times with close friends from Grinnell College.

She is survived by one son Michael Winchell of Grinnell; two daughters, Linda Winchell of Grinnell and Diane Smith of Montezuma; one brother, Duane Lauber of Newton; five sisters, Berneice Fritz of Palm Harbor, Fla.; Jacqueline Gregson of Livermore, Calif.; Donna German of Grinnell; Marilyn Mitchell of Las Vegas, Nev.; Joan Rowland of Dallas, Texas, and Carol Lauber of LaFayette, Colo.; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter; two brothers, Keith and Merlin Lauber, and one sister Lois Crawford.
