OBITUARY

Died, at her home in Hickory Grove township, Jasper Co. Ia., Wednesday, Aug. 23, 1899, Mrs. John Planalp. Her maiden name was Margaret Vanbergen. She was born in Gottennen, Switzerland May 20, 1832. She came to America in 1852 stopping in Sullivan Co., N.Y. Was married April 15, 1854, to Mr. John Planalp, also a native of Switzerland. Together next year they resumed their journey toward the west, stopping in Ripley Co., Ind., three miles east of Versailles, the county seat. Here Mrs. Planalp and her husband spent ten years of the first of their married life, built a little house on a few acres of land, which was home for them in Indiana, four boys and one girl being born to them in this home. In the spring of 1865 Mrs. Planalp and family, after careful preparations made, found themselves and belongings in a two horse covered wagon, ready again to continue their journey to the west. After about one month's travel by wagon, they arrived at the place three miles east of Newburg which has since been Mrs. Planalp's home. She was a member of the Lutheran church. Three boys and four girls were born to her in this home. Prosperity attended and although she was an invalid for so many years, had a pleasant home surrounded by every comfort, the best of which perhaps was the sacrificing, faithful, loving devotion of husband and children. Mother Planalp suffered from stomach trouble such as perhaps but few suffer. She was confined to her room and bed since March, 1884; was very sympathetic, keeping track of all her acquaintances who were sick, grieved when others suffered. Two sons and one daughter preceded her to the other land. A large congregation at the U.B. church, where Rev. Mr. Nichols preached the funeral sermon on Aug. 25, 1899, paid their last tribute of respect to the remains which were laid to rest in the cemetery there near her home. A husband, five sons, four daughters and eight grandchildren survive her.
