ROSCOE C. PLANALP

On the evening of February 5th, 1904, occurred the sudden death of Roscoe C. Planalp at Woodside, Utah, he being at the time agent and operator for the Rio Grande and Western R.R. at that point.

Before going west he had for some two years been in the employ of the Great Western R.R. in Iowa, at Luray, Reinbeck and Marshalltown. Last August he was told by his physicians that his lungs were affected and that a change of climate might be beneficial. Acting on their advice he immediately and bravely bid adieu to relatives and friends, stopping first at Colorado Springs, later at Grand Junction, then at Woodside. His death was sudden and unlooked for at the time, as he had started for his office to go on duty, only reaching the front gate of the house where he boarded, he sank back with scarcely a struggle.

Roscoe was born October 8th, 1883, in Storm Lake, Iowa. He graduated from the high school in class of '99. Three years were passed with relatives at Newburg, Iowa, since which time he was employed as before stated. A member of the Order of R.R. Telegraphers accompanied the remains from Utah to the home of his father, J.W. Planalp, in Storm Lake, Iowa, staying until after the funeral which was held February 11th. He had a noble character and a bouyant disposition. He was kind, affectionate, thoughtful. Many relatives and friends mourn the early end of this young life of so much hope and promise. His uncle, C.D. Planalp, aunts, Mrs. W.B. Dunn and Mrs. J.L. Burroughs of Newburg, attended the funeral. J.L.B.
