Betty Darlene (Tinkle) Story, 80, of Malcom, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.

Her funeral service was Friday, June 18, at Watts funeral Home, Montezuma, with the Rev. Virgil Scott, of the Malcom Methodist Church and the Rev. John Reynolds, of the Malcom Presbyterian Church, officiating. A private inurnment was held at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.

Betty was born Oct. 6, 1923, at Brooklyn, and was raised and went to school in the Brooklyn area. She attended high school through 12th grade, but quit to take care of her grandparents. On Dec. 5, 1942, she was united in marriage with Fredrick Jarvis Story at Montezuma. To this union, four children were born, Sharon, Roy Elaine and Cindy Jo. They lived south of Indianola for several years and managed the Superior 400 Gas Station and Restaurant at Lake Aquabi Junction. They moved back to Malcom where Fred died Jan. 31, 1971. She also managed the Malcom Mini-Mart. Betty had also cooked in both truck stops and was a janitor at the Malcom School. She was baptized and a member of the Malcom Methodist Church. She had been a member of the Jaycee-ettes, served on the Malcom City Council, belonged to the Malcom Ruritans and managed the Malcom Auditorium for many years. She had served on the Malcom Manor Board since 1981. She lived in her own home for 30 years before moving to the Malcom Manor. She liked to cook and garden and enjoyed camping with family and friends.

Betty is survived by five brothers and sisters, Bill (Francine) Tinkle of Grinnell; Bonnie (Lawrence) Ward of Memphis, Mo.; Vernon (Louella) Tinkle of Memphis, Mo.; Verlan (Iva) Tinkle of Malcom; and Rosy Tinkle Lindenman of Barnes City; her four children, Sharon (Doug) Robison of Malcom; Roy (Phyllis) Story of Grinnell; Elaine (Robert) Hunerdosse of Knoxville; and Cindy Jo (Roger) Evans of Victor; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several Nephews, nieces, and other relatives and many friends.

Memorials have been established in her name
