OBITUARY
Dated Jan. 4, 1916Martha Shaffer was born in Indianapolis, Ind., April 4, 1840, and departed this life Dec. 31, 1915, being 75 years, 8 months and 27 days of age. She came to Winterset, Ia., with her parents in 1852 and was united in marriage with Thomas Ballard July 11, 1861. To this union were born two sons, W.C. Ballard of Ewart, Ia., and Clarence Ballard of Montezuma, Ia. She made profession of her faith in Christ at the age of sixteen, and united with the M.E. church, remaining steadfast to the end. In her last sickness when asked if all was well, she replied: "There is nothing in the way, and I am going home." She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, two sons, three grandchildren, four sisters, one being in Winterset, Ia., one in De Soto, Ia., one in Van Meter, Ia., and one in Nebraska; also a brother, Andrew Shaffer of Winterset, Ia., besides her many friends. She was a loving companion, a kind and affectionate mother, and widely known as Aunt Martha for the many kindnesses tendered those with whom she had to do. In fact, she would go at any time to administer to the needs of others. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband and other sorrowing friends.
