RAYMOND TYLER
Raymond G. Tyler, 72, of Decatur, Ill., formerly of Grinnell, died of cancer May 7 at St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur.
Funeral services were held Monday May 10, at Central Christian Church, Decatur, and another service will be held Wednesday, May 12, at Immanual Lutheran Church, Story City, with burial in Ames Municipal Cemetery. Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home, Story City, was in charge of arrangements.
He was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Boone to Ray and Osa Soderstrum Tyler and grew up in Boone. Following graduation from college he taught in Wilton Junction and Grinnell. He came to Grinnell in 1953 as the school system's first guidance counselor, later becoming principal of the junior high school and senior high school, the first principal to administer in the current high school building. He also was the first manager of the original Grinnell Municipal Swiming Pool. In Grinnell he was active in Kiwanis and other community affairs.
He later was a teacher and administrator in Niles Township High School, Skokie, Ill., retiring in 1980 as director of personnel after 36 years in the field of education.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, Decatur; three daughters, Beverly Zimmerman, Edina, Minn.; Carol Gnerer, Minneapolis, Minn., and Vicki Entz, Peabody, Kan.; five grandchildren; three sisters, Neva Milliken and Margaret Childs, both of Ames, and Dorothy Sheldahl, Story City. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Carol Larson Tyler and one grandson.
