--Asahel Chamberlain Newman was born at South Strafford, Vermont, Sept. 16, 1828, and died at his home in this city at one o'clock A.M., Sunday, January 21, in the 72d year of his age. During the years of '46 and '47 he was a student at Norwich University, Norwich, Vt., which school Admiral Geo. Dewey afterwards attended. In 1851 he was united in marriage with Miss Charlotte B. Preston. He carried on the pursuits of farming on the old homestead in Vermont until his migration to Newton, Ia., in 1856. Here he built a home and engaged in farming, six miles west of the county-seat of Jasper. In 1864 he came with his family to Grinnell, and for 35 years they have been residents of this city, living for 31 years in the house which he built at 928 Park street, and in which he died. Mr. Newman has been repeatedly honored with public office, serving as deputy-sheriff several years, and for 26 consecutive years as constable, striving always to discharge faithfully all public duties. He leaves a wife and two children, Mrs. Etta N. Mahler and Dr. W.H. Newman, all of Grinnell. The funeral services were conducted at the house yesterday at two o'clock by Rev. E.M. Vittum, of the Congregational church, which church he joined in April, 1887. The bearers at the funeral were nephews of the deceased. Albert Kendall, S.S. Kendall, Manly Kendall, C.B. Kendall, V.G. Preston and W.K. Simpson. A large company of our best people were present at the services, to attest their respect for one of Grinnell's earlier and most honored citizens.
