ALICE SUTTON RITES FRIDAY
Alice Strand Sutton, 73, a former educator in the Grinnell-Newburg schools, died Monday evening, March 16, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids of complications suffered from Crohn's diseases.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sutton will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Revs. Peter and Allyson Sawtell, co-pastors of the Chester Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Organist will be Alice Renaud, and pallbearers will be Carroll Eames, Glenn Erickson, Bradford Jones, Ervin McClure, Carleton Strand and Lyle Strand. Burial will be at the Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell.
The daughter of Alfred and Katherine Engleson Strand, she was born Sept. 20, 1907, in Chester Township. She attended rural schools and graduated from Gilman High School in 1927.
On June 25, 1930, she was married to Beckham Sutton at the Chester Congregational United Church of Christ parsonage. The couple lived west of Newburg for awhile but had lived in Chester Township for most of their married life.
Mrs. Sutton was a member of the Chester church, the Women's Fellowship and the Bible Builders class. She was also a member of the Sonora Grange, the Friendly Folks Club, the Poweshiek County Teachers Association and the Grinnell-Newburg Parent-Teacher Association.
She had taught elementary education in the rural schools and Grinnell-Newburg schools for 27 years, and she had completed a degree in education at Drake University, receiving her diploma in 1965.
Survivors include her husband; her children, Beatrice Wentzel of Manhattan, Kan., Bernadine Mann of Ames and Ronald Sutton of Marion; nine grandchildren; and her brothers and sisters, Clair Strand of Grinnell, Theresa Beason of Gilman, Kenneth Strand of Adel, Ralph Strand of Kellogg, Donald Strand of Orlando, Fla., and Genevieve Russell of Bettendorf.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Donald Wayne Sutton.
