RUTH GARWOOD RITES TODAY

Ruth B. Garwood, 84, of 1409 Prince St., Grinnell, died Monday afternoon at St. Francis Manor.

Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Russell K. Boersma, pastor of the church, officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Julia Pearce, organist, and Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Calvin, vocalists. Pallbearers were Dan Dhondt, Peter Dhondt, Larry Deppe, Richard Elliott, Bill Wilson, and James Wilson. Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials in Mrs. Garwood's name may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church.

The daughter of Clem and Edna Jenkins Beeler, she was born near Blue Point south of Grinnell on July 9, 1892. She was married to Dana McDowell on Feb. 3, 1910, in Grinnell. The couple had five children.

She was later married to George Kirk Garwood at Oskaloosa on Aug. 25, 1948.

Mrs. Garwood was a charter member of the Calvary Baptist Church and had been a member of the Pythian Sisters. She was employed at Grinnell General Hospital for 25 years prior to her retirement in 1970.

She is survived by three children, Mrs. Edith Ruth Dhondt of Newton, Mrs. Hollis (Addie Marie) Elliott of Grinnell, and the Rev. Dana Max McDowell of Pittsburg, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Mabel McDowell of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; two children, Virgil Laird McDowell who died in 1929 and Mrs. Mildred E. Wilson who died in 1970; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four sisters, Martha Pearl and Grace Jane, both in infancy, Mrs. Nancy Beason and Mrs. Addie Peters.
