VERL J. GARWOOD

Verl J. "Barny" Garwood, 72, former dirctor of public works for the city of Grinnell, died Wednesday, May 19, at his home.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lon Lewis officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and honorary pallbearers were Doug, Eric and David Garwood, Steve Carroll, Michael Jensen and Jim Slebiska. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Fraternal rites were conducted by members of Hermon Masonic Lodge.

The son of Kirk and Bertha Donnelly Garwood, he was born May 24,1920, in Grinnell. He was a 1937 graduate of Grinnell High School. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in Europe.

He was married to Evelyn Esler Aug. 10, 1940, in Nashua. The couple lived in Grinnell where Mr. Garwood was the first Grinnellian to follow his father in a career with the city. He was employed by the city for 36 years, retiring in 1982 as director of public works.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, VFW Post No. 3932, Focht-Tennant American Legion Post No.53 and the Izaak Walton League. He was also active in Masonic circles.

Mr. Garwood was a lifetime member of the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association and was a scoutmaster for 12 years of Troop 313.

Surviving are his wife; his children, Ronald of Sheridan, Wyo., and Sandra Hackett of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Zella Parker of Lakewood, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Charlotte Garwood and Irene Emmert; and one brother, Glenn.
