FRANCES BARTTER

Frances L. Bartter, 89, of the Mayflower Home died Friday, Sept. 8, at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grinnell United Church of Christ-Congregational, with the Rev. David Bowman officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She was the daughter of Adelbert De Morris and Elizabeth Park Pratt and was born May 6, 1900, in Huron County, Ohio. She graduated from Norwalk High School in Norwalk, Ohio and from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1922. She taught for two years at Oberlin High School.

She was married to the Rev. Alfred H. Bartter June 30, 1924, at Redfield, S.D. The couple served Iowa Congregational churches in Gilman, Sioux Rapids, Madrid and Decorah. Mrs. Bartter was ordained in 1944 at Waucoma Congregational Church and later served several churches in South Dakota and Kansas.

She served as former program chairwoman and president of the Iowa Conference Women's Fellowship of the Congregational Church. She was honored as Woman of the Year in Religion in 1965 in Newton, Kan.

The Bartters moved to the Mayflower Home in January 1973. She was a member of the Grinnell United Church of Christ-Congregational and the P.E.O.

Surviving are her husband, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Robert, in October 1976.
