MISS CHARLOTTE CALKIN DIES ON SATURDAY

Charlotte Elizabeth, eldest daughter of John T. and Amanda Pratt Calkin, was born in Johnson County, Iowa May 26, 1848, and grew to womanhood in Iowa City, where her father was a leading photographer and portrait painter.

In the late sixties the family moved to Chicago, where they resided for fifty years.

Charlotte graduated from Medical College, and practiced for a few years in one of Chicago's many hospitals. Eventually she gave up the practice of medicine, and assisted her father in his work.

After the death of her parents she served a few years as companion, and nurse to elderly women.

In 1920 she moved to Grinnell, making her home for the past ten years, with her cousin, Mrs. Harriet C. Marvin, 1132 Main St.

In early life she united with the Congregational church at Iowa City. During her residence in Chicago, she became deeply interested in the work of Mr. D.L. Moody, and the Institute which he founded. She assisted in various forms of neighborhood mission work as she was able.

Since coming to Grinnell she has been a member of the Congregational parish; a regular attendant upon its week day and Sunday services; and a member of Mrs. S.A. Martin's Bible class.

She has been in failing health since last December, though up and around the house every day up to June 8th.

On the 9th of June she was taken to Grinnell Community hospital for expert care. Though very loath to leave home, when settled at the hospital she was much pleased with the nurses and their efficient ministry, and expressed herself as glad that she was there.

Pneumonia setting in cut short the waiting period. She passed peacefully away Saturday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m.

Memorial services conducted by Mr. W.W. Bolt were held at the home, 1132 Main St. this morning at 10 o'clock.

Interment was in Iowa City, beside her parents.
