ESTHER STAHL RITES TODAY

Esther M. Stahl, 73, of Malcom, the widow of Henry E. Stahl, died early Friday morning at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

The daughter of William and Mary Breneman Fry, she was born Dec. 11, 1899, south of Victor. She attended the Victor public schools and received her teaching certificate from Cornell College at Mount Vernon. She later taught rural school at Sonora School north of Grinnell.

On June 14, 1922, she was married to Henry Edward Stahl at Strawberry Point, Iowa. The couple had seven children: Mrs. Lamar (Lorraine) Stanley of Kelley, Iowa; Lyle Stahl of Nevada, Iowa; T-Sgt. Norman R. Stahl of Travis AFB, Calif.; Keith Stahl who died Dec. 4, 1972; Howard Stahl, who died at the age of four years; Margaret Stahl, who died at the age of 17 months; and Raymond Stahl, who died at the age of seven years.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Stahl lived in the Chester and Sheridan communities, moving to a farm south of Grinnell in 1940. They had made their home in Malcom since 1967. Mrs. Stahl was a member of the Chester Congregational Church, a charter member of the Blue Point Friendship Club, and a member of the Chester Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her three children: nine grandchildren, James Stanley of Flint, Mich., Leslie Stanley of Kingsville, Tex., Sharon Stanley of Kelley, Iowa, Deborah Stahl and Elizabeth Stahl of Nevada, Iowa, Jodie Stahl of Malcom, and Beverly, Stephen, and Bryan Stahl, all of Travis AFB; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Fry of Marshalltown; one half-brother, Arnold Gwin of Guernsey; and one half-sister, Mrs. Clinton (Margaret) Reedy of Downey, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband May 22, 1972; her four children; one half-brother, Clarence Gwin; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Ollie Richman and Mrs. Wilma Richman.

Funeral services for Mrs. Stahl were held this afternoon at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John F. Maze, pastor of the Malcom-Sheridan parish, and the Rev. Austin G. Rugger of Woodstock, Iowa, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner. Flower bearers were Mrs. Worth Belden and Mr. and Mrs. John Rugg. Pallbearers were Evan Gwin, Larry Gwin, Wayne Gwin, Wendall Gwin, Donald Sears, and Kenneth Sears. Burial was in Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell.

Should friends desire, memorials in Mrs. Stahl's name may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Eastern Iowa Chapter, Cedar Rapids.
