CHARLES KELSEY DIES IN CALIF.

Charles Kelsey, a former resident of Grinnell, and an older brother of Jud Kelsey, Grinnell College ex-1882, died of dropsy at the General Hospital in Los Angeles, Jan. 5, at the age of seventy years.

This was the second death in a family of twelve children, Willie Kelsey having died some years ago.

Those who survive are Mrs. Katie Gale, Misses Anna, Grace, and Belle Kelsey, Mrs. Lutie Gates of Los Angeles, Jay Kelsey of Chatsworth, Calif., Mrs. Mamie Murphy of Tujunga, Calif., Carl Kelsey of San Diego, Calif., Frank Kelsey of Kansas City, Mo., and Jud Kelsey of Chicago.

The C.D. Kelsey family lived for many years at what was then the south end of East street in the house later owned by Willis Davis for whom Davis Avenue was named when it was opened up to the east. At that time the only houses near were the Bravinder house, the Dr. Kennedy house, now the home of Thos. Newton, and the Satchell house, which stood where the Annie Sanders house now is. The first house north was then the Cravath home and all west of East street was then an open common to the Iowa Central R.R. and to the Mrs. Taylor home, grandmother of Lizzie Sanders Gilbert, which was later the Heald home now owned by Mrs. Alice Wheeler.

In 1881 the Kelsey family moved to Des Moines, living there for some years, then later moving to Los Angeles, where the father and the mother (who was Laura Langworthy, sister of Mrs. Delahoyd and Mrs. Pexton) both died some years ago.

Charles was employed for some years in an insurance office in Los Angeles where he was much loved by his associates, being of a most kindly and cheerful dispostions, but was obliged to resign about two years ago on account of failing health.
