DIED.

WILLIAM MARTINEAU

Wm. Martineau, an early timer in Grinnell, died last Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Phillips, in Cedar Rapids. The burial was Wednesday in the ground at the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown. Mr. Martineau had lived almost continuously in Grinnell since before the war and was well known here. Since last September he had been at the soldiers' home. He was born at Plattsburg, N.Y., in 1829 and so was nearly 88 years old. His parents came to Iowa at an early day and he enlisted in the 5th Iowa Cavalry. While at home on a furlough he was married to Jane Worrell, who died in 1884.

He served at Gettysburg, the second battle of Bull Run and at other hardfought battles and was severely wounded. He has five brothers and three sisters still living in Iowa.
