MRS. E.B. WILEY

One of Grinnell's helpful and devoted women, Mrs. E.B. Wiley, passed away at noon on Saturday at the family home on Broad street after a painful illness lasting for many months. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.W. Cross at the residence yesterday afternoon. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery. The pallbearers were Dr. S.C. Buck, Dr. C.E. Harris, G.H. McMurray, Dr. J.W. Billings, V.G. Preston, and W.S. Roby.

Mrs. Wiley was Ida M. Butler before her marriage to Dr. E.B. Wiley. She was born at Willard's Mountain, Saratoga county, New York, on Sept. 10, 1861. When she was three years old the family moved to Vineland, N.J., where she grew to womanhood, and here she was married to Dr. Wiley on Sept. 10, 1885. At that time Dr. Wiley had been located in Grinnell for four years.

Coming to Grinnell as a bride Mrs. Wiley from the very first took a prominent place in the life of the growing town. She was a devoted wife and mother, but found time also to take an interest in everything which tended to the upbuilding of the community. Her sympathies were wide and her readiness to aid was unfailing. Many times she cared for her husband's patients in her own home in order that nothing might be lacking toward their recovery.

Six years ago the first signs of failing health were noted. An operation at that time brought relief, but during the last two or three years her health has failed steadily until for weeks the end has been expected. She received the best of treatment by specialists at Rochester, Minn., Chicago and New York, but nothing was able to check the spread of disease.

Mrs. Wiley is survived by her husband and five children: Mrs. S.A. Derieux, Mrs. P.A. Walters, Charles, George, and Lucile. Mrs. Derieux and Mrs. Walters have been in Grinenll most of the summer on account of their mother's condition, and all the children were present when the end came.

The members of the Priscilla club, of which Mrs. Wiley was one of the charter members, attended the funeral in a body.

Mrs. Wiley has been one of the women whose lives count in a community's life. Her wide activity, her ready sympathy and her real interest it the people about her have made her a woman who will be missed. The hearts of all have gone out to her in sympathy during these trying months of suffering and now that she is gone deep and sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.
