H.A. ROGERS CALLED BY DEATH

One of the worthy upright men of Grinnell who has joined the majority passed away Tuesday morning at nine o'clock as the result of a cancer. Halleck Allerton Rogers was born at Union, this state, October 6, 1861, and lived on a farm just south of that place. He attended school in Union and was for a time engaged in business in that town.

In 1894 he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Armstrong. To this union three daughters were born, Marie Rogers of San Diego, Kathryn, who is in an art school at Cincinnati, and Mrs. Ruth Lynch of Des Moines. In addition to these three children and his wife there survive him two brothers, R.S. Rogers and E.F. Rogers of Union and one sister, Mrs. H. Peckham of Idaho.

Mr. Rogers with his family made their home at Union until 1913 at which time they moved to Grinnell to take advantage of the schools here. Mr. Rogers was an upright man, not only physically but also in character. We always found him genial, kindly and generous. He was for many years superintendent of the Sunday school at Union and was also director of the choir and a deacon in the Congregational Church, positions which he filled with honor and success.

In Grinnell Mr. Rogers has been modest and retired, but his generous nature and his kind courtesty, as we met him, always made friends and we know that in his death a good citizen has gone.

Some time ago he underwent an operation in Des Moines to see if it would help him but it showed that he was beyond surgical help and he calmly lived on, cheerful and patient until the end came. In Grinnell, Mr. Rogers was associated with the Congregational church and lived an honorable Christian life. Burial was Thursday at the old home in Union.
