Augustus M. Hogan was born in Tipperary county, Ireland, December 25, 1837. Died in Montezuma, Iowa, January 8, 1897, aged 59 years, and two weeks. When a lad of 12 years he came with his parents to America and lived for one year in New York City. From there they moved to New Jersey, where he remained until he was 18 years of age, when he came to Illinois. On the 23rd of August, 1861, being then a young man of 24 years, he responded to the call for troops and enlisted in Co. H. of the 2d Illinois Cavalry. The next day he was married to Miss Rachel A. Wright, and three days later his regiment left for the scene of battle. In 1862, at Holly Springs, he was taken prisoner, was subsequently exchanged, and in August, 1864, received his honorable discharge and returned to his home. That same fall he came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Jackson township, Poweshiek county. In 1874, July 19th, during the pastorate of Rev. W.G. Thorne, he, together with his wife, united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Montezuma, of which he continued a member until his death. He held various official positions in the church, and from the counsels of the official board will be sadly missed. He held the office of sheriff of this county for two terms, and was for a number of years justice of the peace in this township. He was an honored and highly esteemed member of Wisner Post, No. 127, G.A.R., and of the Masonic, Odd Fellows and Iowa Legion of Honor fraternities. In the latter society he was insured for $4,000 in favor of his wife.
