ALBERT L. NEIGHBORS

Albert L. Neighbors, 88, of Grinnell died Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at Friendship Manor.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 16, at Smith Funeral Home with John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Casket bearers will be Don, Gordon, Steve and Gabe Neighbors, Christopher Pinkerton and Matt Meldrem. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Grinnell. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at noon Thursday and family members will be present from 6 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Grinnell Regional Hospice.

He was born July 26, 1917, in Culbertson, Mont., to Fred and Lola Fern Smith Neighbors. The family moved to Missouri and later to Grinnell where he graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1933. He then worked for Sumner Seed Company and for Edwards Market. He was married on Jan. 29, 1938, to Elsie McCaslen in Cedar Falls. They lived in Grinnell and he worked for the supply administration department of GTE, retiring in 1981. He enjoyed restoring and exhibiting antique gasoline engines, socializing with friends at local restaurants, collecting miniature racecars and tractors, and building sets for his electric trains.

He is survived by two sons, Don Neighbors of Toms Brook, Va., and Gordon Neighbors of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one sister Alice Landers of Van Meter and a dear friend, Helen Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a daughter-in-law.
