HOWARD NEIGHBORS

Howard Neighbors, 74, of Grinnell died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Mayflower Health Care Center.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 6, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Molsberry, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Pallbearers were Dave Abarr, Maynard Durr, Jerry Hagen, Chuck Maring, Maynard Raffety and Kenneth Saunders. Honorary bearers were Larry Kunce, Alexander and Daniel Landon, Chuck Manly, Leila Maring, Mark Masek, Steven Neighbors and Mark and Mike Ritter. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Grinnell Booster Club or Mayflower Human Needs Fund.

The son of William Hobart and Gladys Naomi Wright Neighbors, he was born March 22, 1929, in Livonia, Mo. He later moved with his family to Grinnell where he was a 1947 graduate of Grinnell High School. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and later served with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He was married on Nov. 14, 1938, in Grinnell to Barbara Ann Bailey. The couple lived in Midwest City, Okla., before returning to Grinnell in 1949. He was employed as a mail carrier with the United States Post Office, retiring in 1984. He had been a resident of Mayflower since 1996.

He is survived by one son Jeff of Iowa City; two grandchildren, and two brothers, Robert Neighbors of Emmetsburg and Terry Neighbors of Louisiana. He as preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barbara and one son Greg in 1993.
