BURTON GARRETT SERVICES HELD

Burton R. Garrett, 78, a former resident of the Grinnell area, died Tuesday, June 16, following surgery at a Minneapolis hospital.

Funeral services were conducted June 21, at the Northland Funeral Home in Pin River, Minn., with burial at Swanburg. The Rev. Duane Nelson officiated.

The son of H.S. and Belle Blake Garrett, he was born Jan. 1, 1905, in Jasper County. On June 30, 1925, he was married to Thelma Ray. The couple had one son, Richard Ray Garrett.

After farming for a few years, Mr. Garrett began his flying career at Cedar Rapids. He flew for United Airlines on an early mail route from Chicago, Ill., to Cheyenne, Wyo., until mail contracts were taken over by the Army. In 1940, he located near Brainerd, Minn., and trained pilots for the Army and Navy during World W II. He continued his activity and interest in flying until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma; his son, Richard; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.
