CLARA ANN FARLEY

Clara Ann Farley, daughter of James and Sarah Reid, was born February 14, 1874 in Pleasant township near the Ewart Community and passed away July 18, 1955. There were four brothers and two sisters in the family, all of whom preceded her in death many years ago.

Mrs. Farley received her education in the rural schools and attended Normal School in preparation of teaching. She taught several terms in the rural schools of the county near her home.

When a young girl, Mrs. Farley became a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Ewart and was an active member as long as she lived in the community. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Society and other community organizations which she enjoyed very much.

On December 25, 1893, she was united in marriage with Joseph Srelus Farley, also of Pleasant Township who preceded her in death six years ago this month.

Also surviving are three sons and one daughter, Leo E. of Oskaloosa, Emory S. of Malcom, Wilmer R. of Elk Horn, and Leila, the daughter, at home. One son Robert Gordon preceded her in death nine years ago. She also leaves one grandson, Burdette Gordon of Malcom, and seven granddaughters, Mrs. Pauline Ryan of Ewart, Mrs. Charlotte Porter of New Hampton, Mrs. Martha Ann Simmons of Brooklyn, Mrs. Mariam Mae Ganfield of Chicago, Carol and Carmen Farley of Malcom and Jo Ann Farley of Elk Horn, Iowa. Also five great grandsons, Richard, Bruce, Keith, Ryan, Michael and Patrick Simmons of Brooklyn and two great granddaughters, Cyndonna Le Ganfield of Chicago and Shelia Ann Simmons of Brooklyn. Also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Farley was an industrious and devoted wife and mother and enjoyed the family visits and gatherings. She especially enjoyed the grandchildren and great grandchildren when they came to visit in the home.

Mrs. Farley, along with the family was engaged in farming and she enjoyed the activities of the farm and the natural beauty. In later years she enjoyed the birds from her window and watched for their return each year.

She and the family lived on the farm for 52 years and 8 months then moved to Grinnell nine years ago when Mr. Farley's failing health made it impossible for active life on the farm.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from Smith Funeral Home and the United Presbyterian church at Ewart with Rev. E.E. Beattie and Rev. W.J. Stewart officiating.

Music was by Mrs. Rhee Auman and Mrs. Dolph Miller. Pallbearers were Clifford Braley, Sheldon Copeland, Millard Farmer, Carl Child, Clarence Decatur and Edward Hamilton. Interment was in Pleasant township cemetery at Ewart.
