The Brooklyn (IA) Chronicle; June 7, 1901
Sunday May 26th, about one o'clock p.m., Ka-Sha-O-Ke-Mau-Qua-Wa, wife of Ma-Na-O-Kee-Ma stepped outside the house of her father, James Poweshiek, one U.S. Indian policeman, and sitting down beside the house, shot herself through the forehead with a .32 caliber revolver, causing instant death. She was aged 16 and had been married twice, to her present husband only seven days. There seemed to be no just cause for her demise. She left a letter in which she bid all her relatives good bye and claiming she was out of money and it was no use for her to live. She was a good looking girl and was well liked by her friends. The agent is investigating the matter thoroughly, but thus far finds nothing but that would indicate that she deliberately committed suicide. The funeral was held Monday according to the Indian custom, except that she was buried in a coffin. Agent Malin, Supt. Nellis and undertaker Owen of Toledo, were present at the funeral.--Toledo (IA) Chronicle.
