MARY KOCALAS RITES FRIDAY

Mary J. Kocalas, 88, of 1315 Reed St., Grinnell, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 24, at Grinnell General Hospital. She had been at the long-term health center for the past two years.

The daughter of Edward Franklin and Julia Catherine Burtrum Davenport, she was born June 12, 1886, in Grinnell. She had made her home in Grinnell all her life except from 1943 to 1966 when she lived in Peoria, Ill.

She is survived by her daughters, Mrs.Herbert (Faye) Carter of Grinnell and Mrs. Al (Helen) Renaud, also of Grinnell; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Loyal (Thelma) Gooch of Newton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Kocalas; two sisters Mrs. Guy (Bessie) Benton and Mrs. Gladys Coutts; one brother, Fred Davenport; and two brothers and one sister who died in infancy.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kocalas will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John W. McCallum, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Oranist will be Mrs. Willard Heffner, and pallbearers will include Jerry Carter, David Coffey, William Innis, Bob Lint, Jerry Renaud, and Mike Renaud. Honorary pallbearers will be Wesley Ahrens, Carl E. Child, Morgan Hicks and George Hiser.

Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.
