MILDRED UHL BEEM
Mildred Florence Uhl Beem, 102, died Aug. 16, 2006, at Friendship Manor.
Graveside services will be held Sept. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery with a time of fellowship to follow at the Brooklyn Activity Center.
She was born Dec. 19, 1903, the daughter of Walter and Minnie Lincoln Uhl, at the family farm home south of Brooklyn. She attended rural schools, graduating from Brooklyn High School with the Class of 1921 and then attended Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines. She was married on Nov. 24, 1927, to Ray Beem and they were the parents of two children, Walter and Dorothy. She worked for many years as a secretary, first for the Iowa legislature in Des Moines, then the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City, the neurology department of the University of Iowa and later Westside Training Center for Retarded Citizens in Taft, Calif., where she worked until her retirement. She lived in California for many years, returning to Iowa when her health began to fail.
She enjoyed reading and listening to audio books, Iowa Hawkeye sports, Democratic politics and her grandchildren and their families. She was an avid letter writer and corresponded with many friends. Two special events in her life were her 99 1/2-birthday party in June 2003 when her family hosted an open house in her honor and the Brooklyn Days Vintage Clothing Competition in 1999 when the dress for her 1921 high school graduation was modeled by her great granddaughter Jessica Lang and won second place.
She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Lang; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and two great great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Walter and three brothers.
