WILLIAM SHAFFER
William Shaffer, son of Daniel and Sarah Staley Shaffer, was born Nov. 3, 1864 in Tama County and passed away Jan. 19th in a Grinnell hospital. He was 91 years, two months and 16 days at the time of his death.
Cause of death was attributed to the infirmities of old age and he was hospitalized for two weeks prior to his death.
Four years ago he suffered a stroke and had been an invalid since that time.
He spent most of his early life in Tama county near Gladstone and attended rural school near there. He was married to Katie Campbell on Feb. 14, 1891 in Madison township in the home now occupied by his son, Claude.
To this union were born four children, all of whom are still living. They are Jennie Diehl of Cedar Rapids, Mary Shaffer of Brooklyn, Lena Close of Brooklyn and Claude of Brooklyn. Also surviving are four grandchildren and three great granchildren.
His wife preceded him in death on June 22nd, 1909 when the four chldren were small.
He farmed most of his life in Poweshiek county with the exception of a few years spent in Tama county.
He was a member of the Church of Christ of Hartwick and attended services when his health permitted.
The eldest of seven children, he was the last survivor.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 22nd from the Bramer Funeral Home in Brooklyn with Rev. John Rhodes of LeGrand officiating.
Organ selections were provided by Nina Manatt.
Pallbearers were Clyde Brannian, Glen Doty, Joe Strachota, Charley Strachota, Raymond Smith and Hobert Powell.
Interment was at Kent cemetery at Brooklyn.
