CLAYTON PHELPS RITES TODAY
Clayton L. "Dutch" Phelps, 77, of Grinnell, died Saturday morning at St. Francis Manor.
Funeral services for Mr. Phelps were held at 3:30 p.m. today at the Smith Funenal Home, with the Rev. Hugh A. Shiveley, pastor of the Grinnell First Baptist Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner. Pallbearers were Harry Bitcon, Francis Comerford, John Hotchkin, Robert Mitchell, Robert Weiser, and Laird Wray. Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery.
The son of Carl C. and Lucinda Moody Phelps, he was born May 25, 1898, in Grinnell. He attended public schools here and was graduated from Grinnell High School in 1915. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. During World War I he served with the U.S. Army Air Service.
On Aug. 29, 1919, he was married to Estella Ruth Good in Kellogg. Mr. Phelps was associated with the former Met Restaurant and was owner-operator of the King's Grill and Raven Restaurant. He held a life membership in Focht-Tennant Post No. 53, American Legion, and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge, No. 1266.
Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. George (Gerry) Burkart of Marion and one sister, Dorothy Johnson of Cherokee. He was preceded in death by a son, Serge in 1954; his parents; one sister, Pauline Phelps, who died at the age of 3; and a brother, Hoyt M. Phelps.
