LACEY DARLAND RITES HELD TUESDAY

Funeral rites for Lacey Darland were conducted by the Rev. Ray Biggers in the Steffy Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11. Vocal music was provided by William Rempp accompanied by Miss Alice Underwood, organist.

Interment was at the Barnes City Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Robert Broadston, John McDowell, Virgil Walsh, John Sanders, Clifford Beyer and Harley Bryan.

Mr. Darland, 81, passed away Saturday, March 8, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa.

The son of Addie and Newton Darland, he was born in Mahaska County on Feb. 6, 1888.

He lived with his parents on a farm where he helped with the farm work. His eyesight was seriously impaired and he was unable to finish school.

On April 1, 1906, he was united in marriage with Ethyl Aurand. To this union three children were born. They lived in the Barnes City community. After the death of his wife in 1919, he maintained their home with the help of his children.

On Oct. 22, 1922, he was united in marriage with Ruby Steward. To this union two sons were born. One son, Donovan, died in infancy.

In 1931, the family moved to the Montezuma community, where he was employed by the Poweshiek County Highway Department, serving 17 years as foreman. About two years ago they built a new home and moved into Montezuma.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dale, and one grandson, Darrell Van Deventer.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Irene Beatty of Oskaloosa, and Mrs. Iva Van Deventer of Montezuma; one son, Estel, of Hiawatha, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Daisy Goodwin of Montezuma; and one brother, Howard Darland of New Sharon.
