From Montezuma Republican, Poweshiek Co., Iowa Thursday, June 4, 1931

W. F. Stanford died from Stroke
Was in Attendance at Rebekah Convention. – Funeral Services From M. E. Church today.

William (Bill) F. Stanford, long time resident of this community, suffered a stroke Monday night while in attendance at the Rebekah county convention here, the effects form which he never recovered. He died in his home at 11o’clock that evening. His left side was completely paralyzed.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanford had been brought to the I.O.O.F. hall by their son, Lewis, and Mr. Stanford was in better health than usual. He remarked he had just eaten a hearty supper and was feeling fine. The news of his death caused a wave of sadness to fall over the city, as Mr. Stanford was very popular with both old and young. His long services in the schoolhouses gave him a wide acquaintanceship and he was able to remember his many friends.

For the past, few years he had been employed with the Steffy Furniture Company, and was a valuable assistant.

Funeral Services are being conducted this afternoon from the Methodist Church at 3 O’clock, by the Rev. A.H. Barker pastor of the Church at Albia. Burial will be in the local cemetery.

The following obituary was read: William Francis, son of George and Jane Stanford was born in Muncie, Indiana April 1 1855 and departed this life at his home in Montezuma, Iowa, June 1, 1931, at eleven-thirty p.m. at the age of 76 years and 2 month.

At the age of twelve, he moved with his parents to Iowa, settling south of Montezuma in the community near the McIntire mill. Later moving to the Ewart neighborhood and from these to a farm west of Montezuma, spending the rest of his life in and around Montezuma.

July 26th, 1885, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Deedrick at Malcom, Iowa. To this union were born two children, Bessie Stanford O’Neil of Carroll, Iowa, and Lewis E. of this city. These with the faithful companion and one granddaughter, Hazel Stanford, survive.

He also leaves to mourn his loss two sister Mrs. Jack Williamson and Mrs. Ed Doyle and two brothers, Jim and Tom, all of Montezuma, together with a host of friends and neighbors

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Montezuma for 28 years. He joined the Methodist church during the Goff Meetings, and was always a faithful attendant both of Sunday school and church.

He serve twenty-four years caring for the Montezuma school building and to the pupils who attended he was a staunch friend, loved by all. He was known to them as “Bill” and community who spent their school years here will have lost a true friend.
