RITES HELD SATURDAY FOR ROY H. KOGER

Roy H. "Slim" Koger, 68, of 210 North High Street in Gilman, died Thursday morning, July 15, at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.

Roy Koger was the son of John H. and Bessie Lewis Koger, and was born April 5, 1908 in Kingston, Mo. In 1910, he moved with his family to the Newburg area, and attended schools there. He graduated from Newburg High School in 1927, and later attended Grinnell College.

On August of 1937, he was married to Elma Van De Ventor at Gilman. He entered the United States Navy on Dec. 8, 1942, and served as a cook during the second World War. Following his discharge, he returned to Gilman, and was employed at Walker's Super Valu until his retirement in 1970.

Mr. Koger, a member of the Gilman Community United Church of Christ and a trustee of that church, married Bernice Campbell in Omaha on Aug. 20, 1967.

He was a member and past commander of the Gilman American Legion Paul Ward Post No. 149, and was also a member of the Forty and Eight at Marshalltown, and of the Gilman Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice; three step-children, Donald Campbell of Marshalltown, Dr. Robert Campbell of Colorado City, Colo., and Mrs. Gary (Marlene) Anderson of Tama; nine step-grandchildren; two brothers, Russell of Grinnell and Donald of Raynesford, Mont.; two sisters, Mrs. Lloyd (Opal) Paul of LeRoy, Minn., and Mrs. David (Eva) Gobat of Oak Park, Ill.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elma, on March 11, 1965, and two brothers, Dean and John.

Services for Roy "Slim" Koger wre held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, at the Gilman Community United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Doanld Britt, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Harley Everts.

Pallbearers were Harold Barnes, Tom Burchland, Robert Lovig Sr., Marvin Medhus, Walter Schuler and Wendell Walker. Honorary pallbearers were Eldon Joens, Harvey Housman, Ned McCarger, Gene Newell, Denver Walker and Talman Weaver.

Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Commander Harman Anderson and the members of the Gilman American Legion Paul Ward Post No. 149.

Should friends desire, memorials in Mr. Koger's name may be made to the Gilman United Church of Christ.
