The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Dec. 16, 1892

--Mr. P.V. Jones died at the old home north-west of town at 7 o'clock, Dec. 12, passing away quietly and peacefully, without seeming pain. He had been ailing since last June, and was dangerously ill during the summer, but rallied sufficiently to accompany his eldest son, Marcus, to Utah, where it was hoped the bracing mountain air would restore him to health again. While seeming better there, his mind gradually lost its hold of the present and wandered to the past, more pleasant because the recent loss of his beloved wife was not ever present to him. His gradual decline made it necessary for them to bring him again to the old home, where only flitting glimpses of the present seemed to cross his mind, and he passed into the future from that pleasant past quietly and easily. He was born in Wayne, Ohio, in 1819, where he spent his boyhood. Then, removing to Jefferson with his family, he filled positions of trust and responsibility in the town, under his father, Judge Lynds Jones. Here he married Mrs. Lavinia (Burton) Howard, the daughter of Rev. Wm. Burton, and became the father of five sons and one daughter. In March, 1865, he removed with his family to Iowa, having purchased a farm six miles northeast of Grinnell. The next spring he sold to his wife's brother and bought the farm which he has since owned and built the house in which he died. His wife preceded him to that upper home by a little more than a year, leaving him and their eight children to mourn his loss, he to follow so soon. Of the eight children five are married; the eldest living in Utah, one in Ohio, one in Indiana; the others remain near the old home in Grinnell. Mr. Vittum conducted the services at the old homestead, assisted by Prof. L.F. Parker, who spoke of his history and of his life feelingly and kindly. A large gathering of neighbors accompanied his remains to the last resting place in Hazelwood cemetery.
