"AVE" ADKINS DIES; FUNERAL WEDNESDAY

Avery Thurman Adkins, 63, of 1332 Main St., in Grinnell, died this morning at his home.

One of nine children, Mr. Adkins was born to Charles and Sarah Turner Adkins Feb. 13, 1904 in Rock Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa.

At the age of five, Mr. Adkins moved to Grinnell with his family where he attended the Grinnell public schools, graduating from Grinnell High School in 1923.

On Aug. 27, 1930, he married Irene Hedges in Grinnell.

Mr. Adkins owned and operated the 5th Avenue Barber Shop in Grinnell for many years.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational and was past exalted ruler of the Grinnell Elks Lodge, past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Izaak Walton League in Grinnell.

Survivors include his wife Irene; four brothers -- Harvey Adkins of Arizona City, Ariz., G.L. "Roy" Adkins of Searsboro, Adelbert Adkins of Marion, Iowa, and Lloyd Adkins of Redlands, Calif.; three sisters -- Mrs. Lee (Lucinda) Bridges of Tulahoma, Tenn., Mrs. Mima Guthrie of Culver City, Calif., and Mrs. Robert (Wilma) Griffieth of Garden City, N.Y.; one son -- Dave Adkins, of Colfax, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister.

Funeral services for Mr. Adkins will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Newell Davis of the United Church of Christ-Congregational officiating.

Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
