MRS. LONGSHORE DIES IN COLORADO

A telegram received today by W.J. Nelson announced the death of Mrs. Amanda Longshore in Longmont, Colorado. The body will arrive here Monday morning on Rock Island train No. 8, due at 8:15 a.m. and there will be services at the grave in Hazelwood cemetery. The telegram was from H.A. Byerly, a nephew, who is accompanying the body to Grinnell.

Mrs. Longshore was the widow of John Longshore and the family was one of the prominent ones in the early history of Grinnell. They lived first near the Samuel Nelson home and their residence was one of those destroyed by the cyclone. There were two sons, who with the husband preceded her in death. The older son, Henry, died during the cyclone year. The other son, George, was famous as one of the greatest high school sprinters in Iowa high school history. He was one of the famous three man track team, including himself, Karl Kiesel and George Hodgdon, which won the Stagg meet in Chicago for Grinnell high. Later he entered Wisconsin and while a student there broke through the ice while skaing and suffered a long immersion in icy water which undermined his health. He entered Grinnell college but his health did not permit his competing as a sprinter, although he played on the college baseball team. He died in the west of tuberculosis.

Mr. Longshore owned the residence on the west side of Broad street north of Fifth avenue, built by Professor Barnes, which for many years was known as the "Longshore house" and where many generations of college students made their homes. The Longshore estate also owns the building on Main street until recently occupied by the Thompson grocery store and other Grinnell property.
