I.K. VARNUM WAS OLD SETTLER

(From the Montezuma Republican)

Isaac Kimball Varnum of near Malcom, at one time one of the largest land owners in Poweshiek county, who died at his home Sunday, following an illness of a week's duration, was the last of five children, and was born in Peacham, Vermont, November 26th, 1848. For years he farmed with his brother, Phineas, and had made his home on the same farm since 1865, since coming to Iowa with his parents. Mr. Varnum was 83 years of age.

Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist church at Malcom. Dr. Alma Chapman of York, Nebraska, Mrs. Lulu Varnum Rider and Miss Blanche Varnum of Chicago, came from a distance to attend the funeral.

The Varnum family has been in America since 1600 and came from Wales.

Ike, as he was known to all, was a shrewd, industrious man, and in partnership with his brother, farmed extensively. They also raised much cattle and were considered wealthy.
