SARAH BURNELL, 66, DIES SATURDAY, SERVICES TODAY

Mrs. Sarah Burnell, 66, wife of Frank Burnell of Grinnell, died Saturday morning at a local hospital following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Seath, pastor of the Madison Church of Christ, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Stephen J. Epler, associate pastor of the Grinnell Christian church.

Vocal music was provided by Mrs. Don Thompson, accompanied by Mrs. Roy Coop at the organ. Flower bearers were Mrs. David DeVilder and Mrs. Richard Dean.

Pall bearers were Roger Clayton, Miles Clayton, Eugene Lang, James Lang, David Abel, and Bruce Bolen. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery.

The second daughter of Brownlie and Dora Hayes Graham, she was born August 3, 1897, on a farm near Brooklyn. She attended the Madison township schools and later graduated from Iowa State Teachers College. She then taught in the schools of Cedar Falls and Brooklyn.

On August 20, 1919, she was united in marriage with Frank Mead Burnell at Brooklyn and to this union was born one son, Merle Hayes Burnell of Grinnell.

In addition to her husband and son, Mrs. Burnell is survived by her mother, Dora Hayes Graham; her daughter-inlaw, Charlotte Burnell; and three grandchildren, Larry Dean, Norma Jean, and Loren Scott Burnell, all of Grinnell.

Also surviving are one brother, Archie Oliver Graham of Montclair, Calif.; and four sisters, Jeanetta Clayton Hartshorn, Carrie Hazel Bolen, and Olive Lois Abel, all of Grinnell, and Frances Helen Kleiss of Brooklyn.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1951; one brother, Paul Eugene Graham in 1942; and one sister, Agnes Christiana Lang, in 1958.

Following her marriage, Mrs. Burnell lived in the Madison community for seven years and then moved to a farm east of Grinnell in 1927.

She was baptized by Stephen J. Epler on September 13, 1907, and was a member of the Madison Church of Christ. During her college days she played violin in the college orchestra.
