CARRIE H. BOLEN

Carrie Hazel Bolen, 90, of Grinnell died Wednesday, July 28, at her home.

A memorial service was conducted Friday at the Grinnell Christian Church, with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Music was provided by organist Marlene Toney, vocalists Richard and Karolyn Milliken and pianist Lorna Lang.

Pallbearers were Ben, Bruce and David Bolen, Cathy Councill, Tom Smalley and Linda Taylor. Honorary bearers were Sally Bone, James, Robert and William Pech, Andy and Paul Smalley and Suzi Williams.

Graveside services were conducted at Brooklyn Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Brownlie and Dora Hayes Graham, she was born April 19, 1903, near Brooklyn. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school.

She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1920 and attended Iowa State Teachers College. Following her education she taught rural school near Brooklyn

She was married to Verner William Bolen Oct. 28, 1922, in Des Moines. The couple farmed east of Grinnell until 1945 when they moved to Grinnell. Mrs. Bolen worked at the Broadway Department Store in downtown Grinnell for many years. She was a charter member of the Grinnell Christian Church.

Survivng are her children, Dora Pech of Peoria, Ariz., Bruce of Tama and Ann Smalley of Elmhurst, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; one brother, Archie Graham of Springfield, Mo.; and two sisters, Olive Abel of Grinnell and Frances Kleiss of Brooklyn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Donald; one great-granddaughter, Rebecca Councill; a brother, Paul Graham; and three sisters, Jeanetta Hartshorn, Agnes Lang and Sarah Burnell.
