PRISCILLA ALDEN

Priscilla Alden, 83, of Providence, R.I., formerly of Newburg and Grinnell, died Sunday, Sept. 2, at Bethany Nursing Home in Providence.

The body was cremated. Graveside services, followed by burial of the ashes, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell, with the Rev. Ken Wallace of the Newburg-Chester United Church of Christ officiating.

The daughter of George Doty and Etta F. Heider Alden, she was born Sept. 30, 1906, in Newburg. She was a direct descendant of John Alden, a signer of the Mayflower Compact.

In 1914, she and her family moved to Albion where her father operated a general store. She graduated from Albion High School. The family later came to Grinnell where she graduated from Grinnell College. She later received a master's degree from Brown University.

She taught at Malton High School in Malton, Mass., in 1930 then taught drama from 1931 to 1971 at Barrington, R.I., serving for 17 years as head of the school's drama department.

Following her retirement she continued to live in Providence.

There are no immediate survivors. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lyle S. Alden.
