ROSA SCHMIDT FINNER

Good Woman Passes to Final Rest After Years of Usefulness.

Rosa Schmidt was born in Batavia, Ill., Oct. 13, 1864. She came to Iowa with her parents and settled on a farm near Independence, Iowa, when a small child. At the age of 21 she was married to Charles Finner, also of Independence. They removed to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where the two children, Edith and Otto, were born.

In 1892 they came to Grinnell to manage the large farm near here owned by Mr. Averill, of Cedar Rapids. Since then Mr. and Mrs. Finner have lived on several farms, finally settling on the old Patton place two and one-half miles southwest of town. This farm they purchased and lived on till Mr. Finner's death in 1919. Mrs. Finner then sold the farm and came to live in Grinnell at 1612 Seventh Ave., buying both the Bray properties on that street. In August, 1921, she traded these for the Hadley house at 1216 Elm street, where Mrs. Finner lived at the time of her death.

Mrs. Finner was always a busy woman, never being content to be idle for a moment. She was a wonderful cook and was so efficient that she was able to accomplish an unusual amount of work.

She was always cheerful and jolly, never complaining, even when in great pain. Her exact ailment was not known till a month ago when she was told by physicians that she had gallstones. She was not advised just then to have an operation immediately and really seemed for a few days to be getting better up till Tuesday, Aug. 1. Her condition from that day grew rapidly worse till it was seen an operation was necessary if she was going have any chance to live. She was taken to the Community hospital on Thursday evening and was operated on at (11)? o'clock. The operation itself was successful but the disease had been of too long duration, lasting over a period of more than twenty years. She passed away Friday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, leaving one son, Otto Finner, of Grinnell, and one daughter, Edith Lemke, of Grinnell; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Anders of Waterloo, Mrs. Lena Shenke of Independence, Mrs. Josie Mathis of Kansas City, and three brothers, Chris. Schmidt, of Independence; Arthur Schmidt, of Independence, and Louis Schmidt of Cedar Rapids. There are also three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The immediate family were all present at the funeral which was held at the home Sunday afternoon. Rev. W.B. Wilson conducted the services.
