MR. HOLCOMB RITES TODAY

Crayton W. Holcomb, 90, of 1019 West St., died Friday morning at the Lone Elm Nursing Home. He had been in failing health the past few months and had been cared for at the nursing home since last September.

The son of Benjamin J. and Alice White Holcomb, he was born July 22, 1881, at Chippewa, Ontario, Canada. When he was two years old, his family came to the United States and homesteaded on a farm near Carrington, N.D. He attended the local schools near his home, later attending Fargo College for two years. He then attended Fargo Business College.

On June 15, 1909, he was married to Ethel Cooper at Carrington. The couple would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this June. Following their marriage, Mr. Holcomb farmed at Carrington until 1928 when the family moved to Arkansas for a short time. They came to Iowa in 1930 and farmed near Montezuma and Malcom before moving to a farm near Lime Springs, Iowa, in 1939. Since 1946, the couple had made their home on West St. in Grinnell.

Mr. Holcomb was a member of the First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Ethel; his three children, C. Ben Holcomb of Cedar Falls, Donald C. Holcomb of Des Moines, and Dr. Keith W. Holcomb of Ft. Collins, Colo.; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and twin brothers, Charles A. Holcomb of San Bruno, Calif., and Chester E. Holcomb of Sacramento. He was preceded in death by one brother, Loyd Holcomb; and three sisters, Mrs. Fern Campbell, Miss Bessie Holcomb and Mrs. Pearl LaSalle.

Funeral services for Mr. Holcomb were held at 1:30 p.m. today (Monday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Hugh A. Shiveley, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Leonard Pearce. Pallbearers included Kenneth Cooper, Daryl Holcomb, Dennis Holcomb, Ronald Holcomb, Dick Pilgrim and LaVerne Smith. Flower bearers were Mrs. W.C. French and Mrs. Harvey Quindt. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
