OBITUARY.

------------

GEORGE D. PARMENTER.

George David Parmenter was born in Rock Island County, Illinois, January 25th, 1849. After a lingering illness of several years his death from heart failure occurred August 27th, 1913, at the age of 64 years, 7 months and 2 days.

After growing up on his father's farm, getting a liberal education in the common schools and at the University of Iowa, he taught school for a time and in 1873 came to Iowa and began farming the virgin soil about twelve miles northwest of Grinnell.

Two years later he returned to his Illinois home and was married December 31st, 1874, to Miss Lydia Roberts. They at once returned to the farm near Gilman, Iowa, and helped to build up the new country. By industry and careful management they added many acres to the original farm and on account of their clever, genial disposition, theirs was one of the more homelike homes Iowa has ever known.

In 1893 they moved to a smaller farm one mile west of Grinnell, where they lived until 1902, when they retired to the Parmenter home, 122? Main Street.

He united with the Baptist Church of Grinnell about nine years ago and has lived a consistent Christian life, bearing with cheerful patience the dark, tedious illness it has been his lot to endure.

The funeral occurred at 3:00 P.M. Friday, August 29th, conducted by Rev. G.P. Mitchell, whose text was the 5th verse of the 39th Psalm. His favorite hymn, "Shall We Gather at the River," was beautifully sung by Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Benson. The body was laid to rest in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The pallbearers were: W.H. McCulloch, A.A. Foster, W.O. Willard, J.M. Campbell, J.N. Hartzell, and Samuel Osborn.

Passing over to the Home beyond he leaves his beloved wife and their four living children: Marcus, who lives seven miles south of town, Mrs. Rosella Worcester, 522 Broad St., and Josephine and Florence, at the family home, one daughter having died in infancy. There are five grandchildren.

Besides the above he leaves two brothers: Edward L., of Gilman, Iowa, and Willard E., of Edgington, Illinois, and another brother, Elbert E., having died at Rock Island, Illinois, about six years ago.

Relatives present at the funeral from out of the city were: E.L. Parmenter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Parmenter, Lee Parmenter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Parmenter, N.R. McGrew, Miss Kezia McGrew, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McGrew, Miss Laura McGrew, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hill, of Gilman, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Van Derveer and daughter, Irma, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wood of Cedar Falls, Iowa; John Runner, of Green Mountian, Iowa; Mrs. W.E. Parmenter, Mr. and Mrs. O.R. Shutte, and D.L. Parmenter, of Edgington, Illinois; A.E. Parmenter and son, Elbert, of Morrison, Illinois, and Ira Roberts of Rock Island, Illinois.
