OPAL F. MORRISON, 94

Opal F. Morrison, age 94, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Brooklyn Community Estate, following an extended illness. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, at the First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, with the Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Opal is survived by her daughter, Patricia Hartley, and husband, Robert, of Delmar; a son, Randall "Rick" and wife, Debra of Brooklyn; three grandsons, Scott Hartley (Mary) of Shakopee, Minn., Timothy Morrison (Amy) of Brooklyn, and Bryan Morrison of Grinnell; five great-grandchildren, Megan, Christopher, and Alexander Hartley of Shakopee, Minn., Laila Morrison of Brooklyn, and Landen Morrison of Grinnell. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Paulene Provin of Brooklyn, Norma Thorpe of Des Moines, and Rosie Morrison of Center Point; and a brother-in-law, Cleo Madeson of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin, in 1987; a sister, Pearl Rauch; and five brothers, Clarence, Roy, Clyde, Elwood and Walter Provin.

Opal Fern Provin was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Guernsey, the daughter of Ulysses Grant Provin and Emma Belle West Provin. She graduated from Guernsey High School in 1934, and married Melvin Edward Morrison on Jan. 26, 1935 in Montezuma. The couple farmed for 52 years. She remained on the farm for five years following Melvin's death and moved into Brooklyn in 1992. Opal was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn. Opal's interests and pastimes were her family. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren, and she cherished the time she spent with them. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and did not miss watching a football or basketball game on TV. During high school, she lettered in basketball and track and still has many medals and ribbons to show her grandchildren.
