CHUCK MANLY

Chuck Manly, 83, of Grinnell and Okoboji, died on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Milford Nursing Center, Milford, Iowa. A memorial gathering was held Wednesday evening at the Smith Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa Hospice or to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112

Chuck was born March 6, 1928, in Grinnell, the son of Charles M. and Nell Cooper Manly. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1945 graduate of Grinnell High School and received his JD at Drake University College of Law in 1951.

On August 21, 1949, he was united in marriage to Bernie A. Lippold, in Minneapolis. The couple moved to Grinnell in 1951 where he practiced law until February of this year.

He was a member of the Poweshiek County Bar, Iowa State Bar, American Bar, and past president of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers, which he helped organize. He was also a member of the Rotary, Elks Lodge, Grinnell Country Club, and a charter member of the Lions Club. He loved his family and grandchildren, the practice of law, and his antique wood boat. He enjoyed spending a lot of his time at his cottage at Lake Okoboji.

Survivors include his wife, Bernie of Grinnell; three sons, Charlie of Grinnell, Tom of Dallas, Texas, and Mike of Malcom; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John C. Manly, Robert C. Manly, and William F. Manly; and one sister, Marybea Letts.
