NELL MANLY RITES FRIDAY

Mrs. Nell C. Manly, 86, of the Mayflower Home died Tuesday morning at Grinnell General Hospital of an apparent heart condition.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Philip J. Ramstad, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Organist will be Mrs. Willard Heffner, and pallbearers will be Everett Armstrong, Charles Kempton Letts, Thomas Day Letts, Charles M. Manly III, J. Thomas Manly and Michael L. Manly. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials in Mrs. Manly's name may be made to the Mayflower Home Health Care Center.

The daughter of Dr. Francis M. and Ella D. Scarbrough Cooper, she was born Nov. 11, 1899, in Searsboro. The family later moved to Grinnell, and she attended Grinnell High School. She was graduated from Grinnell College in 1914, later teaching English in junior high and high schools at Greene, Tipton, Davenport and Grinnell.

On Nov. 2, 1923, she was married to Charles M. Manly. The couple had five children.

Mrs. Manly was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, the Women's Fellowship of the church, Pi Rho Lambda, Chapter B.M. of the PEO sisterhood, the D.A.R., the Priscilla Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also was a member of the Grinnell School Board for a number of years.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Marybea) Letts of Denver, Colo.; three sons, John C. Manly of Irvine, Calif., Charles M. Manly of Grinnell, and William F. Manly of Austin, Tex.; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Manly, a prominent Grinnell attorney, in 1951; a son, Robert C. Manly, who died in 1965; and a sister, Bea Cooper, who died in childhood.
