JOHN C. MANLY

John C. Manly III of Lake San Marco, Calif., formerly of Grinnell, died Nov. 9, 2005, in California.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grinnell High School Building Fund.

The son of Charles M. and Nell Cooper Manly, he was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Grinnell where he was raised and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1944. He attended Drake University in Des Moines where he was a member of the football team. He served with the United States Army during World War II as a chief administrative non-commissioned officer in the Judge Advocates Division in the Philippines. Upon his discharge in 1946 he returned to Drake, then later transferred to Southern Methodist University, Dallals, Texas, where he attended both its Schools of Law and Business. He was married in January, 1965, to Mary Jane Kemp. They later were divorced, and he was married in October, 1987, to Sylvia Lee Williams in Geneva, Switzerland.

He held sales and marketing management positions in Dallas, the San Francisco Bay area and Southern California with several major equipment manufacturers. He founded the profitable companies, MANMAC, Inc., and Manly-Williams Inc., with headquarters in Orange County and San Diego, Calif., which covered the western states and included Hawaii. He retired early in 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Lee of Lake San Marcos; two children, Mary Alice Manly of Florence, Oregon, and John C. Manly IV of Orange County; two step children; three grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; and two brothers, Charles M. Manly and William F. Manly, both of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Robert C. Manly and one sister Marybea Letts.
