RENE A. BAZYN

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, March 23, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn, for Rene A. Bazyn, 88, of Brooklyn, who died Friday night, March 19, 1999, in Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn. The Rev. Paul Peters of Elkader officiated, and Keith and Kyle McLaughlin were servers.

The organist was Marilyn Kriegel and the soloist was Augie Hawkins. Selections were "Wind Beneath My Wings," "How Great Thou Art," and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Honorary casket bearers were Charles Arens and Julian Arens. Casket bearers were Larry Schafbuch, Vic Landuyt, Richard Claeys, Jack Tuttle, Camiel Landuyt and Russell Tuttle. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn.

A Rosary service was held Monday evening in the Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn.

Rene August Bazyn, son of Sarafine and Leona Slock Bazyn, was born Feb. 22, 1911, at Belle Plaine, where he received his education.

On July 14, 1937, he was married to Marie Sophia DeCoster in St. Bridget's Church, Victor. He worked in a shoe store in Belle Plaine, gas station in Victor, and delivered groceries. Since 1937 Rene worked on a farm for Tom and Doyle Ryan north of Brooklyn.

Rene was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn. He enjoyed fishing, rolle bolle, farming and spending time with his family.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his ability to tell a story, and his love of socializing with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Meldrem and Bertha DeCoster; one brother, Maurice; and two granddaughters, LouAnn and JoEllen McDonald.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; five sons and five daughters, Jean Wheeler and her husband, Ron, of Sigourney, Mary McDonald and her husband, Fred, of Brooklyn, Dixie Willett of Cedar Rapids, Leo and his wife, Judy, of Deltona, Fla., Betty Vance of Oak Harbor, Wash., John and his wife, Colleen,of Montezuma, Dave of Brooklyn, Paul and his wife, Kathy, of Elkader, Jim of Montezuma, Ann Morrow and her husband, Mike, of Blairstown; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.
