MARY COOK RITES TODAY

Mary Alta Cook, 56, of Rte. 2, Grinnell, died of an apparent heart attack at her home Thursday morning, May 8.

Funeral services for Mrs. Cook were held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. R. Edward Cook, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Carrollton, Ga., officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were Leo Ahrens, Gary Durr, Lloyd Durr, Harold Fleener, Beecher Graham and Raymond Innis. Flower bearers were Delores Graham and Ruth Wheeler.

Burial was at the Rock Creek Cemetery west of Grinnell. Should friends desire, memorials in her name may be left at the Smith Funeral Home.

The daughter of Dwight A. (Snide) and Velva Hazel Mattewon Pearce, she was born Aug 29, 1923. She attended rural schools in Rock Creek Township and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1941. During World War II she worked in defense plants in Kellogg and Des Moines. She was later employed at the Montrose Hotel in Cedar Rapids in the business office.

On Jan. 1, 1953, she was married to Dwight A. Cook in Chicaago, Ill. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids until 1957 when they moved to Santa Barbara, Calif. In 1982, they came to Grinnell and in recent years lived west of town.

Mrs. Cook is survived by her husband, Dwight, and a son, U.S. Navy 2nd Class Petty Officer Jeffery Wayne Cook of Norfolk, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents.
