J. CRATTY DIES IN LOCAL HOSPITAL; SERVICES TODAY

James Harlan Cratty, 65, of Rte, 2, Grinnell, died last Monday at a local hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Cratty was born July 12, 1901 in Grinnell to Charles H. and Sylvia Woomer Cratty. He was a lifetime resident of Grinnell and attended the Grinnell public schools graduating from Grinnell High School in 1921.

During summer vacations and for a few years after graduating from high school, Mr. Cratty worked for Roy Anderson and Sons doing painting. He worked for Standard Oil Co. before operating the D-X Service Station located across from Grinnell College for about 10 years.

On May 17, 1924 Mr. Cratty married Dolona Schwab. For the past 17 years they have lived on a small acreage just west of Grinnell.

Mr. Cratty was a member of the Grinnell Methodist Church and the Hermon Lodge No. 273 A.F. and A.M.

Survivors include his wife, Dolona; two sisters--Julia Shaw of Grinnell and Mary Coon of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cratty was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers--John Wesley and Willis.

Funeral services for Mr. Cratty were held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester E. Custer, pastor of the Grinnell Methodist church officiating.

Organist was Kathleen Heffner.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert Mitchell, Herbert Carter, Earl Mitchell, Homer Lowrey, Paul Parish and Francis Cox. Pallbearers were Russell Stoker, Donald Stoker, Marvin Stoker, Robert Stoker, Bernard Young and Carlyle Phipps.

Masonic graveside services were conducted by members of Hermon Lodge No. 273 A.F. and A.M. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery.
