The Deep River Record (Deep River, Iowa) March 14, 1935

OBITUARY OF A.P. HUGHES

A.P. Hughes, who was injured in a fall, on Thursday, February 21, was sticken with pneumonia and passed away at his home on Friday March 1, 1935. His daughter, Delight, and son, Delmar, were with their father during his last hours, but it was impossible for Delaine to come from Jacksonville, Florida.

The following obituary was written by Rev. Lloyd Tennant, pastor of the M.E. church at Bloomfield. Rev. Tennant was Mr. Hughes' pastor at Deep River, for a number of years.

Alonzo Parrish Hughes was born in Lee county, Iowa, on April 15, 1853, the youngest son of Jesse and Louisa Hughes. During his boyhood his parents lived at Aledo, Ill., where he became a printer apprentice. Later in life he went to Cedar Rapids where he held the position of foreman on the Cedar Rapids Republican for a period of eight years. He served on a number of city papers, and in 1900, went to assume the editing and publishing of the Deep River Record.

He had always longed for a country or small town newspaper and so his ambition was realized in the publishing of the Deep River Record for twenty-seven years.

He came to the Benton County Star in Norway and for the past eight years has been publishing this paper.

During his residence in Deep River he was united in marriage to Lissie Ann Green of What Cheer. There came to bless their home two daughters, Delight and Delaine, and one son, Delmar.

Mr. Hughes was at different times a member of the Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Masonic orders, but of late years had only kept his active membership in the Masonic order.

His war activities were not so publically mentioned but he was a "Minute Man," and served on the county unit of the American Red Cross. His activities were not only public but very often he put himself to expense and extended effort to carry forward some good work and enterprise for the church and community.

He was a life long member of the Methodist church, always had a church column in his paper and frequently set forth some very certain philosophy favorable to the position that religion must have in one's life. For the past five years he has been in failing health, not able to take charge of the work he loved and had given his life to carry on. This great work, humble as it seemed at times, was continued, by his help mate and companion, his wife.

He leaves besides his wife, the daughters, Mrs. Russell Anderson and husband, and small daughter, Dixie Lee of Belle Plaine, Mrs. Nathan Frederic and husband of Jacksonville, Fla., and son, Delmar of Norway. Also one sister, Mrs. Louise Dilley of Denver, Col. Besides there are a number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends in Deep River, Norway and other places he has lived.

The funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Norway, in charge of Rev. Lloyd Tennant of Bloomfield, assisted by Rev. Beck, pastor of the Norway M.E. church. Interment in the M.E. cemetery north of town where Masonic services were held.--Benton County Star.
