ROBERT RICE

Robert Rice was born in Wayne County, Kentucky, and died at his home east of the city April 14, 1907, aged 56 years, 11 months and 11 days.

When he was about 18 years of age his parents moved to Iowa, settling in Rock Creek in April, 1868. November 3, 1876, he was united in marriage with Melda Parmley, who survives him. Six children were born to this union, five living to mourn with their mother the loss of a father and husband.

The deceased came to Rock Creek when it was yet new, and by economy, industry and thrift he accumulated a large property, and assisted in advancing the material interests of the community in which he lived. A pioneer in Jasper County, he combined the rugged characteristics of the pioneer with the qualities of heart and mind that know and appreciate the best in life, and so aided in the progress of the people among whom his lot was cast. He loved education and its advantages and was honorable in all his dealings with his fellowmen.

In 1895 he removed to Grinnell township, and about three years ago bought the handsome farm where he died.

Th funeral, held Tuesday at two o'clock, from the residence, was conducted by his former friend and neighbor, Elder Fred Elmore, who in a touching and impressive manner paid a fitting tribute to the life and character of a worthy man. The large number of friends who joined in these rites to add their testimony to his work, indicate but slightly the universal esteem in which he was held. Bearers were J.C. Creamer, Chas. Sullens, Race Garret, G.W. Cole, C.T. Cessna, and Eb. Turner. Interment was in Hazelwood.

His five surviving children are Sheridan, Columbus, Cleveland, Nina and Marion.

Press Rice and family of Newton were present at the funeral.
